Brahmas talk courtesy of Blog P-1 Chad

It was a record setting year for the Texas Brahmas as the club set 12 franchise records en route to a 42-16-6 season (90 points). Now the Brahmas have their eyes on the big prize which is the Ray Miron Persident’s Cup. The Nytex Sports Centre will host games one and two of the CHL’s Southern Conference Finals this Friday and Saturday (April 10th and 11th @ 7:05) with the Texas Brahmas taking on the Odessa Jackalopes. Texas and Odessa each won their respective divisions this season, and finished one (Texas) and two (Odessa) in the overall conference standings. The two teams battled each other six times during the regular season with Texas going 4-1-1. Brahmas goaltender Brett Jaeger notched all four of the wins against the Jacks this season, and forward Scott Sheppard led the scoring with 7 points (3 G, 4 A).

Keep your eyes on Tyler Schworchinski who leads the Brahmas in post season scoring with 7 points in four games (6G, 4A). Schworchinski notched all four game winning goals as the Brahmas swept the Killer Bees of Rio Grande Valley in the Conference Semis. The four game winning goals in a four game series is something that has never before happened in the Central Hockey League.

The Nytex Sports Centre has been kind to the Brahmas this season with Texas going 26-5-1 on their home ice, and a perfect 2-0 in the post season so far. Texas home record was the best in the league, and it included a stretch of 16 consecutive wins from 12/27/08 -> 03/07/09. There are discount tickets available for all Nytex Bronze League players, coaches, family, and friends. To order tickets contact Chad Siewert in the Brahmas Front Office.

Next Season

Here's some info that came out of the coordinators meetings, thanks to the report of one of the coordinators:

Here's some of the info that came out of the coordinator's meeting this past weekend.

All-Star game will be Saturday, April 11th after the Brahmas game. There won't be a rookie game this season. Two all-star teams: players from the Stingers, Ice Gators, Senators, Spider Monkeys and the Silver Bullets will be one one team, and players from the Indians, Lady Stars, Arc Angels, Jaguars and Mid-air Collision will be on the other. Those who play on the all-star team have the option to purchase their jersey for $50. All goalies are welcome to play in the all-star game.

Next season, there will be 12 games and two mid-season practices. Games start on the 18th.

There will be a new playoff format at the end of next season which will be a little more competetive - it will last a couple or a few weeks and be more tournament style, meaning regular season standings would not totally eliminate the 3rd, 4th, etc seeds from contention for the Keg like it has been in the past.

These sound like positive changes to me! I have also gotten alot of support from league management that the scorekeepers will be encouraged to pay more attention - I watched them surfing ebay and MySpace and Facebook (see zmomma, Facebook is nothing but trouble!) while in the scorekeepers box during games, and while we probably won't see Pointstreak, at least the scoresheets will be more quickly and more accurately loaded into League Lineup, which will keep costs down but still give everyone a better idea of how the other teams and our own teams are doing compared to everyone else, and make it more fun for stats freaks like me to see more dimensions that just who won and lost.

^How's that for a run on sentence? Bob Sturm, eat your heart out.

Three Cheers for Bohl

Say what you want to about his referee skills (yeah, we know, there is plenty to say) but Bohl did come through in a big way with the Keg engraving like he promised us earlier this season. And The DLS, Arc Angels, Indians, and Stingers all appreciate it. Now that we have such a righteous trophy, lets hear from the masses -Where should the Keg be displayed between now and next season's championship?

Ice Gators vs Indians 4-4-09

Gators Win 5-3

Another pretty evenly matched game - The end of the first period found the teams tied with one apiece, thanks to a Bishop-to-Anderson Pass that Anderson put past Indians goalie Ryan Kelly (playing his first of three games that night), and a Mollette-to-Painter feed that Painter put past Bruno for an Indians goal. Gators #99 (Martinez? Martinest?) answered back in the second period unassisted. Third Period was action packed with the Gators' Sosnoski, Martinest, and Williams scoring, and Kyle Kelly for the Indians putting in a couple of goals. By 1:28 left in the 3rd, the Gators were up by two, and a brew-ha started that sent 3 Gators and 2 Indians feeling a crowded sense of shame in the box for the remainder of the game.

More game recaps coming this week, keep checking here!

The two Bronze League All-Star teams will be named the "Texans" and the "Fire", paying homage to two other Tarrant County based historical Central Hockey League teams.

If the team coordinators will email their selections to me, I will post them up.

During the off week, after I get all the pictures and game summaries done from last week's playoffs, I'll spend some time blogging about the histories of these two teams. One of our faithful readers agreed to give us a story about his time as a Fort Worth Fire season ticket holder.

Does anyone have Texans or Fire stories to share?

Jaguars vs SpiderMonkeys 4-4-09

Jaguars vs. Spider Monkeys

Spider Monkeys win 7-4

The Spider Monkeys took off like a rocket ship in this game going up 5-0 on Jaguars’ goalie Jack Bratley in the 1st and 2nd period, Jacob Day and Rob Montemayor each got a couple of goals and Mike Smith got one. The Jaguars’ Scott O’Donnell finally answered with a goal late in the 2nd period. Steven Pack scored one for the Spider Monkeys to go up 6-1 at the end of the 2nd but the 3rd Period was all Jaguars. Mike Best’s turn get pummeled as the Jaguars’ Jeremy Foster got 2 and O’Donnel got another to make it three in a row. SM’s Jacob Day poked the final one past Bratley to bring the final score to 7-4 in favor of the Spider Monkeys.

Penalties were the other story in this game with 18 PIM, 8 for the Jaguars and 10 for the Spider Monkeys.

P.S. – The Uniform Czar is extremely pleased with the helmet of Spider Monkey’s goalie Mike Best, which is a 3-D airbrushed spider monkey face. Awesometown.

Dallas Lady Stars: Stanley Keg Champs

The Stingers threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Dallas Lady Stars, but it wasn't enough. The Stingers had won the 2 regular season matchups but as often happens under that circumstance, the third meeting went the other way. The game was just as close as the previous two in the season. Final score 3-2. It's worth mentioning that the second DLS goal was a buzzer beater at the end of the 1st period - the faceoff in the Stingers' end with 0:00.9 seconds (yes, less than one second) was won by DLS, passed twice, and fired into the Stingers goal before the buzzer sounded. Mind Boggling.

Shocking hand gestures and unholy acts took place during the post game celebration upstairs, the most offensive photos are being withheld from the album over there on the right.

More scores and notes tomorrow, and throughout the week we will be discussing some of the upcoming chsnges to the schedule for next season, playoff formats, etc.

Keep in mind that the Bronze League All Star game will take place immediately after the Brahmas game next week.
