Brahmas question for those in the know...

Seems like the Brahmas have made tons of roster moves and signings in the month or two since the end of last season. Is this flurry of activity normal so soon after the end of the season? I've not been a CHL follower for very long so I don't really know if this it's normal or not.

It is very typical in the CHL to have a flurry of activity as soon as the season ends. Most of the guys in the CHL sign one year contracts, so as soon as their contract expires these players start mulling their options.

Some CHL players have agents, some dont. The CHL has a rule that states that each team can only have 4 veterans on their squad. A veteran is someone who has played in 300 professional games. Each CHL team is suppose to have a few rookies on their squad as well.

But the main reason you see this flurry of activity is we are trying to lock up players for next year before they sign with other teams. At this level there are lots of options for players. You can go play in one of the European leagues, or jump over to the East Coast Hockey League.

We lost one of our forwards this offseason (Brandon Benedict) to the Belfast Giants in Ireland. If you follow Brahmas newsblasts you will notice that we signed Anders Strome who had 60 points in 07-08 for the Brahmas, then went over to Denmark to play. Next season he will rejoin the Brahmas.

The Brahmas started this past season with three of their players overseas. Grant Jacobsen was playing in England, Jordan Cameron was in Germany, and Strome was in Denmark. We got Cameron and Jake back about a month into the season, but Strome stayed in Denmark.

Long story short, CHL rosters are constantly changing, especially in the offseason.

Chad hit it on the head. Know one thing. Coach Wildfong is a master at signing good solid players. If you get the chance sometime in September he will hold a tryout. I have never seen anything like it. He works these players to the brink, it is amazing to see the level of skill and fitness.

Yes thats right in late September the Brahmas have an open tryout. It costs a couple hundred dollars, and lasts all weekend. Coach Wildfong is out there on the ice literally running guys into the ground. Think of it like two a days for hockey on steroids. Its insane to watch, Wildfong will skate these guys into the ground. You will see guys puking, and there is a very good chance that someone will end up in the hospital.

Each year there are between 15 and 30 people that take part in this camp with only two being awarded a roster spot on the TRAINING CAMP roster. However this year one of our making the cut guys, Ross Rouleau, got the called up in January, and played out the rest of the season with us which included winning the Cup. More info here:
